Dorothée van den Berghe is a Belgian filmmaker, based in  Brussels. She graduated in 1994 from Luca School of Arts with a Master’s degree in Visual Arts.

Her fiction films and documentary projects offer intimate portraits that explore the complexity of human emotions and relationships, delving into the inner worlds of her characters with sensitivity and depth. Van den Berghe's work is characterized by an intergenerational focus, reflecting her fascination with physicality. She portrays strong female characters and provides a much-needed female perspective.

After producing successful short films such as BXL MINUIT and directing several TV films for VPRO, Dorothée completed her first feature film, MEISJE (Girl). This intimate portrait of three generations of women was released in 2002 and won the Prix de la Jeunesse and the Prix de CICAE/ARTE at the Locarno International Film Festival.

Selected for the Cinéfondation residency at the Cannes Film Festival, Dorothée worked on her second feature, MY QUEEN KARO, based on her memories of the 1970s in Amsterdam. While writing, she continued to direct short films such as ABSOLUTELY AFRO and ZOE. In 2009, MY QUEEN KARO premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and won the Prix de la Jeunesse at the IFF Créteil des Femmes and the Plateau Award for Best Young Actress.

Known for her ability to see and portray the world through children’s eyes, Dorothée directed ROSIE & MOUSSA, her third feature film for  young audiences, written by Michael de Cock. It premiered internationally in 2018, winning the Grand Prix at FIFEM Montreal and the Lion for Best Children's Film at the Cinekid Festival.

In 2023, she directed ALLER/RETOUR, which was a new collaboration with Michael de Cock. It’s a road movie about the friendship between a female truck driver and an unusual newcomer.

Brussels often features in Dorothée van den Berghe’s work, inspired by its cultural diversity and acceptance. This vibrant melting pot fuels her imagination, reflected in her films' diverse characters.

Returning to her focus on the female perspective, Dorothée is currently engaged in developing both a new feature film and a television series project.
