Buiten de Lente (Off Spring), 2010

MARIE-HÉLÈNE

I came home on a Friday. On Saturday we went to see the doctor. He put a stethoscope on my head and made me listen to a beating sound, first that of my own heart, and then another with a much faster rhythm. He said: “That’s the heart of the child you’re carrying”. I almost fainted then.

ISABELLE

I never felt any shame. I have never been ashamed of my story because I feel I have done nothing wrong. There's nothing wrong with having sex for the first time at 19.

Synopsis: In Off Spring, two women testify about how they became pregnant unintentionally and why the decision to give up their child was forced upon them. Making such a decision is one thing; living with it is another. How do you deal with it? How do you live with it? Marie Hélène and Isabelle each in their own way struggled with giving up their child. It was only when they found their child again that their lives fell back into place.

“Motherhood is a very sensitive subject. Giving up your child is 'not done'. However, adoption is highly valued. Many films and books deal with the growing pains of adopted children and many a programme talks about the agony of adopting parents. But the woman who gives up her child never gets a voice. They do in this film”.
