Rosie & Moussa, 2018

LEON
(Rosie's father to Rosie)

If you drop a jam sandwich from your hand, with lucky people the jam sandwich falls nicely upwards. But with me? With me, everything always sticks to the ground. Mum is much cleverer. She doesn't drop her sandwich. I hope your sandwich falls better than mine.

Synopsis: Rosie moves with her mother to an apartment on the other side of Brussels. She gets to know a lot of new people, including Moussa, who lives in the apartment above her, who gives her a complete tour of the neighbourhood, including the roof. And together they search for Rosie's father, who hasn't come home in some time.

*De Morgen:

"When was the last time you saw Molenbeek on screen in a positive way? For that reason alone, the film adaptation of the children's book Rosie & Moussa could not come at a better time. (…) The apartment building has a symbolic function. People from different walks of life live together there. Sometimes this goes well and sometimes not so well. But above all, it is not glossed over. Young viewers are smart enough to draw their conclusions. Yes, this film bathes in political correctness. Thus, it fulfils a subtle educational role for children at a crucial age. Perhaps it could be even more correct. That Moussa of all people incites his girlfriend to ride the tram without paying is needlessly affirming. Director Dorothée Van Den Berghe manages to preserve the look and feel of the illustrations. Regularly, the screen is filled in with dancing, coloured areas, which serve as snowflakes, confetti or trains whizzing by. A graphic element, for which Vanistendael was called upon. The fresh soundtrack finishes it off, courtesy of Le Motel and a little help from Zwangere Guy and Témé Tan. Rosie & Moussa turns a maligned part of Brussels back into a lively, bright neighbourhood. And that is exactly what young Brussels could use today".

*Knack:

“With the support of music by Le Motel and Zwangere Guy and graphic design interventions by Vanistendael, Dorothée Van Den Berghe makes it a genuine film that more correctly captures the vibes of the capital than many adult dramas”.
