Girl has a fairly mundane, recognizable story. Twenty-year-old Muriel, to the dismay of her exhausted mother, exchanges her cramped village life for a life in the city. In Brussels she rents a room with 36-year-old, free-spirited Laura, who has just decided that it is time for a child. Due to all kinds of circumstances, the women's lives become intertwined. Dorothée van den Berghe: 'I work quite instinctively, but the intention was to show people who have gotten stuck at a certain stage, who have postponed choices, making it a fermentation process. Laura is forced to make a decision because of her age. Muriel actually too because what she experiences, you usually experience much earlier. And Muriel's mother has stayed in her marriage for too long. All three of them come to choices through small crises in their lives, causing that fermenting vessel to explode.' (Skrien)
