“Three women, three generations, three bodies.”

When Dorothée Van den Berghe graduated from Sint-Lucas in Brussels, she sketched in Rue Verte the lives of a prostitute and an Islamic woman who, one completely 'unpacked' and the other very complicated, lived in the same house, crossed and influenced each other's path in life. The parallel story-lines and strong physicality that she explicitly showed at the time were subtly woven together years later in her moving feature film debut Girl.

I wanted to make it clear that one step taken by someone also helps someone else take a step further. These may be small things for us, but for them they are important. When you choose such a story, you take the risk that it is too small to be picked up by people. This film is therefore the most difficult one I have ever made; precisely because it is very fragile.

I live and work in Brussels and everything I encounter somehow gets stuck in my head. If I had to write about an exotic place, I would be lost. I'm just bad at things I don't see. I would like to film abroad and have a bit of adventure... But I will probably choose Brussels again for my next film. (Film & Televisie)
