“Like Rosie, I grew up with only a mother.”
What was it like to film there when Molenbeek was in the news after the terrorist attacks?
"The response to a Flemish filmcrew was sometimes difficult. Eggs and potatoes were thrown. It did help that we had done the casting in Molenbeek. The team included some people who spoke Arabic. The location where we filmed was the neighborhood where Imad lives. When we had problems, I could call, the actor Imad, to calm everyone down."
In your previous films you worked with a mix of professional actors. And again now.
"That's right. Children are not professional anyway. With non-professional actors you can really capture that, which works very well at a certain moment, but then no longer. Almost like in a documentary. That sometimes means that I work with people who never do film again. Like with Charlotte. Or maybe they do, like with Matthias Schoenaerts, who had just finished school in My Queen Karo and was very insecure. The combination with seasoned actors is interesting. They have to work differently because they have a non-actor in front of them. It is then very pleasant when a thoroughbred actor like Damiaan De Schrijver feels that there is room for improvisation and then just does a little dance." (Knack Focus)
