“It was exotic for me to take an interest in a traditional family.”
Is there a part of you in the character of Muriel?
Everyone experiences insecurity related to sexuality. With me, it happened much earlier. All my characters are late. Muriel has a puberty crisis at age 20. At 37, Laura still does not have children. Martha is 55 years old and has been with the same man forever and would like to change. In these three women, there is a part that could be me. Each of us has an introverted side, an extroverted side or anxiety about growing old, about having made the right life choice.
Why did you opt for a very “documentary” style?
I wanted to show women of different ages and intimate scenes as they are in reality. I didn't want a sheet to hide a breast. The actors were of the same opinion, it was they who pushed me down this path.
Do you recognize yourself as a female director?
“I just do cinema. I am a woman making a film about a woman but for me it is not a feminist film. Even if it is true that we feel when the female characters are written by a man. (La Libre Culture)
