“It’s easier to make a film from more of a distance”
Van den Berghe is part of Wanda, an action group that aims to draw attention to the gender imbalance in the film landscape. Part of what we do is to follow the journey of these female filmmakers after they graduate. We coach them and encourage them to keep submitting their projects. But we also try to get a clearer picture of why they drop out. Children, you hear them say. But there are many filmmakers with children. Of course that makes the barrier higher. I also waited longer because I thought: 'Make this film first'. I think it would be good if there were a big bubble, an impulse that does not make too many demands, but offers freedom and trust. Every voice must be given the opportunity to become stronger. This is the only way we can get to more unique ways of telling stories. (Humbug)
